Recycling Centre: Sending zero waste to landfill and reducing our environmental impact

The ongoing Recycling Centre project, based in Willenhall, West Midlands, provides a dedicated waste and recycling centre that processes a variety of materials. As a result of our team's efforts with the project, the company now sends zero waste to landfill, with 44.18% of waste being recycled and 12.85% processed via aerobic digestion.

The ongoing Recycling Centre project, based in our Willenhall offices in the West Midlands, provides a dedicated waste and recycling centre that processes a variety of materials. These include paper, cardboard, polyplastics, aluminium, glass, and waste packaged food.

As a business we care deeply about our colleagues, customers, communities and the environment, that is why we ask customers to backhaul these materials as part of the distribution process, helping to promote sustainability across the supply chain. The centre also supports A.F.Blakemore & Son Ltd’s supplier basket rental scheme, which aims to reduce packaging waste, further reinforcing the company's passion for sustainability and protecting the environment.

Our operational teams involved in waste management, including those handling waste from stores and depots, have been working together to support this long-standing environmental initiative.

The waste food collected is processed at an anaerobic digestion plant, where it generates biogas that is then used to supply the National Grid and produce agricultural supplements. The entire operation is managed in collaboration with MITIE, a partner specialising in waste management, ensuring that the processes are efficient and aligned with AFB's environmental goals. This system has been in place for several years and is a key part of AFB's ongoing effort to improve recycling and reduce waste overall, in line with the company's broader environmental strategy and waste hierarchy principles.

As a result of these efforts, A.F.Blakemore & Son has achieved remarkable success. The company now sends zero waste to landfill, with 44.18% of waste being recycled and 12.85% processed via aerobic digestion. These figures demonstrate the company’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact and highlight the effectiveness of its waste management strategy. Through this initiative, we are living our value of helping to build a better future, proving that responsible waste management can have a significant positive impact on both the environment and the community.
